Preschool children get sick very often due to the fact that they are in large crowds and their immune systems are not yet fully developed. Therefore, infections occurring up to 8-10 times a year are not uncommon, especially in the first year of attending kindergarten. Infection is a problem for working parents, who have to take a leave of absence from work for that time. For this reason, the question often arises – when can a child be sent to kindergarten after an antibiotic?
Antibiotic therapy in a child – this is what you need to know
Antibiotic therapy is needed when a child has a bacterial infection or a bacterial superinfection after a viral infection. Then the pediatrician prescribes the necessary antibiotic. The treatment should last as long as the doctor recommends and in the doses he prescribed. Of course, in case of adverse symptoms, one should consult, whether by phone or in person. The doctor can replace the antibiotic with another. Antibiotic therapy in children works after just 24 hours, and after that time the child is no longer infectious. However, this does not mean that a child after an antibiotic can be sent to kindergarten or go out in the yard with him right away then.
Can a child on antibiotics go out of the house?
Antibiotic vs. walking
And can a child on antibiotics go for a walk? A short walk is possible when there is no longer a fever, but choose a desolate place, such as a forest or park, so that the child does not come into contact with other viruses and bacteria when his body is still weakened by the fight against the infection. For the same reason, do not send your child to kindergarten as soon as the temperature returns to normal and the symptoms are not bothersome. This is not well received by both teaching staff and parents of other children. Remember that when your child recovers and wants to go outside, you can only take him for a short walk if it is not too warm, too cold or windy. The child should not overheat, so when getting ready for a walk, you can’t dress the child in too many layers. It is necessary to dress it exactly as it was when healthy, appropriate to the weather. You can go out for a short walk 3-4 days after starting antibiotic therapy, provided there is no fever.
Antibiotic and kindergarten – when and if a child can go to kindergarten after antibiotic?
Wondering if a child on antibiotics can go to school or kindergarten? Or at least whether a child on antibiotics can leave the house? As we mentioned earlier, after 3-4 days you can go out for a short walk, but you cannot send your child to kindergarten.
This is possible only after the end of antibiotic therapy and consultation with the pediatrician.
And can the child go to kindergarten after the antibiotic? Most often, the doctor recommends that after the antibiotic, the child should return to kindergarten even after a week after the end of antibiotic therapy, and at least after 3-4 days. The idea is for the body to gain strength after fighting the infection. Immediately after antibiotic therapy it is still weakened and then it is easy to catch another one. At the same time, be sure to provide your child with a proper diet when he or she returns to kindergarten.
